Acyclovir Side Effects

Why is this medication prescribed?
Acyclovir is an antiviral drug. It is used to treat infections caused by herpes viruses.  It helps the sores heal faster, keeps new sores from forming, and decreases pain/itching. This medication may also help reduce how long pain remains after the sores heal.

Before taking Acyclovir or use Acyclovir Injection
To make sure you can safely take Acyclovir, tell your doctor if you have any of these other conditions:
if you areallergic to acyclovir or valacyclovir (Valtrex)
if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
if you have kidney disease
if you have liver disease

Acyclovir side effects:

Gastrointestinal
Gastrointestinal side effects have included nausea, vomiting (in up to 5 percent), diarrhea (greater than 1% to less than or equal to 3%), loss of appetite (0.5% to 2%), stomach pain (1% to 3%).

Nervous system
Nervous system side effects have included dizziness (in up to 3 percent), headache (in up to 12 percent).

Musculoskeletal
Musculoskeletal side effects have included back pain (1%-3%).

Genitourinary
Genitourinary side effects have included difficult urination (in up to 2 percent).

Other
Other side effects have included easy bruising or bleeding, swelling in your hands or feet, unusual weakness.

What other information should I know?
Colchicine is very effective as part of a combination package where it is used to inhibit inflammation backed by second and third line attack that relieves inflammation then blocks pain. Be careful if you are being treated for any other health problem, or if you are taking supplements. There are many medicines that can react badly with colchicine, so please double-check with your doctor and pharmacist before combining colchicine with any other treatment. It is also better to avoid this medicine during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
