Pravastatin Side Effects

What is Pravastatin used for?
Pravastatin is in a class of medications called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins). It works by reducing the amount of cholesterol made by the liver. Lowering "bad" cholesterol and triglycerides and raising "good" cholesterol decreases the risk of heart disease and helps prevent strokes and heart attacks.

Before taking Pravastatin

Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to ranitidine or any other medications.
Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease.
Tell your doctor if you have liver disease.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant.
Tell your doctor if you have diabetes.
Tell your doctor if you drink more than two alcoholic beverages per day.

Pravastatin Side Effects:

Headache
Dizziness
Diarrhea
Weakness
Mild muscle pain
Heartburn
Extreme tiredness
Loss of appetite
Rash
Hives
Itching
Difficulty breathing or swallowing
Swelling of the face
Dark colored urine
Memory loss or forgetfulness

What other information should I know?
Pravastatin is used in adults and children who are at least 8 years old.
Take extra birth control precautions during intercourse while on Pravastatin. Drinking alcohol may increase your risk of liver damage while taking this medication, therefore you should refrain from alcoholic beverages. In addition, there have been rare cases in which taking Pravastatin has led to the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue. This can possibly lead to kidney failure. If you have any unexplained muscle pain or weakness, or notice a change in your urine, notify your doctor immediately.
