Metformin Side Effects

What is Metformin?
Metformin is a medication that is utilized by people with Type 2 diabetes to maintain healthy blood glucose levels. This not only regulates blood sugar, but has also been shown to increase ovulation in women who were previously anovulatory. Metformin is for people with type 2 diabetes. Metformin is sometimes used in combination with insulin or other medications, but it is not for treating type 1 diabetes.

Before taking Metformin
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had heart, liver, or kidney disease.
Tell your doctor if you have a history of heart disease.

Symptoms of Overdose
If you think you have used too much metformin, seek emergency medical attention. Symptoms of overdose include feeling like you have low blood sugar (hunger, headache, confusion, drowsiness). Feeling weak or dizzy, tremors, sweating, rapid heart rate or seizure are also symptoms of metformin overdose. Get help immediately if you suspect you have experienced a metformin overdose.

Fever
Unusual drowsiness
Hypoglycemia
Hyperglycemia

What other information should I know?
Metformin should not be given to a child younger than 10 years old. Extended-release metformin (Glucophage XR) should not be given to a child younger than 17 years old.
When taking metformin, be alert for symptoms of lactic acidosis: hyperventilation, fatigue, malaise, muscle pains, and unexplained sleepiness. This is a life-threatening condition and must be treated immediately.
Monitor blood glucose levels regularly, and follow any dietary instructions closely.
