Imodium side effects

Why is this medication prescribed?
Imodium is used to treat diarrhea. It works by reducing the muscular contractions of the intestine, which reduces the speed at which waste moves through the gut. Before taking Imodium, tell your doctor if you have a fever, mucus in your stools, a history of liver disease, or if you are taking an antibiotic.

Before taking Imodium
To make sure you can safely take Imodium, tell your doctor if you have any of these other conditions:
fever;
kidney or liver disease;
allergic to any other medications;
pregnant or plan to become pregnant;
if you are taking an antibiotic;

Imodium side effects:

Nervous system
Nervous system side effects have included dizziness, drowsiness, tiredness (in up to 2.5 percent).

Gastrointestinal
Gastrointestinal side effects have included constipation (in up to 1.5 percent), vomiting (in up to 2 percent), nausea (greater than 1% to less than or equal to 3%), dyspepsia, abdominal pain, abdominal distention and dry mouth.

Dermatologic
Dermatologic side effects have included rash, pruritus, urticaria, and angioedema.

Genitourinary
Genitourinary side effects have included urinary incontinence, hematuria (greater than 0.1% to less than or equal to 1%), urinary retention.

Other
Other side effects have included sore throat, peeling, dysentery, blood in the stool.

What other information should I know?
This medication is not recommended for use in children under the age of 12 except on the advice of a physician. If you become pregnant while taking this medication, contact your doctor immediately.
