Warfarin is an anticoagulant (blood thinner) that inhibits the synthesis of clotting factors, thus preventing blood clot formation. It works by decreasing the clotting ability of the blood. It is usually taken once a day with or without food. Take warfarin at around the same time every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand.
Before taking Warfarin
You should not take warfarin if you are allergic to it, or if you have:
stomach or intestinal bleeding or ulcer
kidney disease
a history of bleeding problems
high blood pressure or severe heart disease
Pregnant or plan to become pregnant
a history of stomach or intestinal bleeding
Warfarin side effects:
Dizziness
Blood in the stool
Blood in the urine
Nausea
Weakness
Vomiting
Pain in your stomach, back, or sides
Itching
Hives
Difficulty breathing
Wheezing
Diarrhea
Bleeding gums
Pale skin
Trouble concentrating
Gas
Feeling cold
Hair loss
What other information should I know?
If you receive new prescriptions from someone other than your usual medical provider, make sure to remind him or her that you're taking warfarin. Ask if you'll need additional blood tests from your regular care provider to make sure your blood clotting hasn't been affected by the new medications you're taking.
