Why is this medication prescribed?
Lithium is used to treat and prevent episodes of mania (frenzied, abnormally excited mood) in people with bipolar disorder (manic-depressive disorder; a disease that causes episodes of depression, episodes of mania, and other abnormal moods). Lithium is in a class of medications called antimanic agents. It works by decreasing abnormal activity in the brain.
Before taking Lithium
To make sure you can safely take Lithium, tell your doctor if you have any of these other conditions:
fever;
organic brain syndrome;
kidney or liver disease;
allergic to any other medications;
excessive sweating;
pregnant or plan to become pregnant;
Stop taking lithium and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
Gastrointestinal
Gastrointestinal side effects most commonly have included vomiting (4% to 7%), diarrhea (in up to 3.5 percent), anorexia, nausea (in up to 2.5 percent), and abdominal pain.
Nervous system
Nervous system side effects most commonly have included dizziness (in up to 3.3 percent), vertigo, sleep disturbances (greater than 1% to less than or equal to 3%), seizures, hallucinations, seizure.
Cardiovascular
Cardiovascular side effects have included fast or uneven heartbeats, a variety of arrhythmias, hypotension.
Dermatologic
Dermatologic side effects have included itching skin, rash, blisters, peeling.
Genitourinary
Genitourinary side effects been reported rarely.
Other
Other side effects have included muscle stiffness, sweating, fever, blurred vision, weakness.
What other information should I know?
It is important for you to keep a written list of all of the prescription and nonprescription (over-the-counter) medicines you are taking, as well as any products such as vitamins, minerals, or other dietary supplements. You should bring this list with you each time you visit a doctor or if you are admitted to a hospital. It is also important information to carry with you in case of emergencies.
