Folic acid side effects

Why is this medication prescribed?
Folic acid is a part of the B complex of vitamins. It helps the body make healthy new cells. Everyone needs folic acid. For women who may get pregnant, it is really important. Foods with folic acid in them include leafy green vegetables, fruits, dried beans, peas and nuts. Common symptoms of folate deficiency include diarrhea, macrocytic anemia with weakness or shortness of breath, nerve damage with weakness and limb numbness, pregnancy complications, mental confusion, forgetfulness or other cognitive declines, mental depression, sore or swollen tongue, peptic or mouth ulcers, headaches, heart palpitations, irritability, and behavioral disorders.

Folic acid side effects:

Nausea (in up to 2 percent)
Abdominal distention (greater than 0.1% to less than or equal to 1%)
Concentration problems (0.3% to 1%)
Irritability (0.2% to 1%)
Anxiety (in up to 1 percent)
Depression (greater than 0.3% to less than or equal to 1%)
Rash (0.2% to 0.6%)
Sleep problems (0.2% to 0.6%)

Folic acid side effects have been reported rarely.
