Carvedilol Side Effects

Why is this medication prescribed?
Carvedilol is used to treat heart failure and hypertension (high blood pressure). Carvedilol is an alpha- and beta-blocker.  It works by relaxing blood vessels and slowing heart rate to improve blood flow and decrease blood pressure.

Do NOT use carvedilol if:

you have severe liver problems
you have ever had asthma or other breathing problems
you are having surgery, including dental surgery
you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant
you have a very slow heartbeat and you do not have a permanent pacemaker
you are allergies to other medicines and foods

Carvedilol side effects:

Nervous system
Nervous system side effects have included headache (in up to 6 percent), dizziness (greater than 21% to less than or equal to 30%), vertigo (in up to 1.8 percent), tinnitus (greater than 0.1% to less than or equal to 1%), dry mouth, drowsiness, convulsions.

Gastrointestinal
Gastrointestinal side effects have included nausea (in up to 5 percent), vomiting (2% to 6%), diarrhea (in up to 9 percent), gastrointestinal pain (1% to 3%).

Respiratory
Respiratory side effects have included shortness of breath (in up to 4 percent), asthma (0.2% to 1%), pulmonary edema, bronchospasm, cough.

Dermatologic
Dermatologic side effects have included rash, pruritus, exfoliative dermatitis, peeling.

Genitourinary
Genitourinary side effects have included decreased libido (0.2% to 0.6%), hematuria (in up to 2 percent), micturition frequency increased.

Musculoskeletal
Musculoskeletal side effects have included joint pain (in up to 3 percent), gout (in up to 2 percent), muscle cramps.

Other
Other side effects have included increased hepatic enzymes, BUN increase, blurred vision (1% to 3%), fever (1% to 3%).
